Boarding House Talks About Choosing a Skateboard Deck

Setting Up A Skateboard, What The Deck

It’s the foundation that everything else is built on, so it’s important to choose the right one for you. With so many different brands, sizes, shapes, and materials to choose from, it can be overwhelming to try and pick the best one. In this blog, we’ll go over some of the key things to consider when choosing a skateboard deck.

Choosing Deck Size

Choosing Size

The size of your skateboard deck is an important factor to consider. Skateboard decks come in a variety of widths, ranging from around 7 inches to 9 inches or more. The right size for you will depend on your height, weight, shoe size, and skating style. Generally, the wider your feet are, the wider your deck should be, and the taller you are, the longer your deck should be. However a lot of personal preference comes into consideration as well. A Larger deck is more stable and easier to catch at the end of your trick, making it a popular choice for vert riders. Where a smaller deck will be quicker to flip and easier to manoeuvre, making it an ideal direction for street riding. Skaters often experiment with different size decks to find their perfect fit, or even size down/up to help them lock in that trick they have been working on. Most common skateboard decks for adults range from 8.0" - 8.5".

Choosing Deck Size

Choosing Shape

Skateboard decks come in a variety of shapes, from Traditional Popsicle shapes to Old-school Reissue and Cruiser shapes. The shape you choose will depend on your skating style and personal preference. Popsicle-shaped decks are the most versatile and are good for street skating and ramp skating, while Old-school and Cruiser shapes are better for cruising and carving. Have fun and don't be scared to try something new, there are a lot of fun "shaped" decks making for a unique riding experience.

Choosing a material

Choosing Material

Skateboard decks are typically made from one of three materials: maple, bamboo, or composite. Maple is the most common material and is known for its strength and durability. Bamboo is a more eco-friendly option and is lighter and stronger than maple. Composite decks are made from a combination of materials and are often cheaper than maple or bamboo decks. Then there are the decks made of premium materials like Carbon Fibre and VX, that cost a bit more but are almost indestructible. Carbon decks are made from layers of carbon fibre that are laminated together to create an ultra-light and ultra-strong deck. VX decks are made from combination of fibreglass and epoxy resin, which creates an incredibly strong and durable deck. Making them more resistant to impact damage and less likely to break. If you are looking for a high-performance skateboard deck that can handle intense skating and last for a long time, a carbon or VX deck may be perfect for you. However, if you are just starting out or are a casual skater, a traditional wood deck may be more practical option.

Skateboard Deck Graphics

Choosing Graphics

Skateboard decks come in a variety of graphics, from simple solid colours to intricate designs. The graphic you choose is a matter of personal preference, but it’s important to choose a graphic that you like and that represents your style. There are premium Graphics like "Ever-Slick" which features a special coating on the bottom that is designed to reduce friction and increase speed when sliding. This coating is typically made from high-tech polymer or resin material that is applied to the bottom of the deck.

Choosing Brand

There are a lot of skateboard deck brands out there, each with its own reputation and style. Some popular brands include Hockey, Santa Cruz, Welcome, and Polar. It’s important to choose a reputable brand that makes high-quality decks.
