Boarding House Talks About Choosing Skateboard Trucks

Setting Up A Skateboard, What The Truck

Skateboarding is a fun and exciting sport that requires the right equipment to perform well. Skateboard trucks are an essential component of a skateboard that connects the deck to the wheels. They determine your ability to turn, grind, and perform tricks. However they come in a large variety of sizes, styles, colours and brands. Don't worry we are going to help make those options a more simple.

Choosing Truck Size

Size Matters, Sorry Guys

One of the most important factors to consider when choosing skateboard trucks is the size. The size of your trucks should match the width of your deck. For example, if you have an 8-inch deck, choose trucks that are 8 inches wide... With Deck Sizes ranging from 7" - 9"+ it only makes sense that so do your trucks. Riding trucks that fit your deck is essential for optimal performance, stability, durability, and aesthetics. It's important to choose the right size trucks to ensure that you can ride safely and comfortably while getting the most out of your skateboard. A skateboards truck width is measured in mm between the two axles that hold the wheels, as a form of universal standard between brands. Use this for a quick reference guide:

139mm 8" Deck Width
144mm 8.25" Deck Width
149mm 8.5" Deck Width
169mm 9"+ Deck Width

Fine Tuning Your Truck Height & Width

Besides fitting your trucks to your deck you can also work with your trucks to offer endless combinations of customization, and depending on your goals you may end up choosing a different deck. Consider that Skateboard trucks come in different heights, and the one you choose will depend on your skating style. Low trucks are ideal for technical street skating, while high trucks are better for vert skating. Also, the width of your trucks can also affect your skating style. Narrow trucks are great for street skating, while wider trucks are better for cruising and carving.

Choosing a Truck Material

Choosing Material

Skateboard trucks can be made from different materials, including aluminum and titanium. Aluminum is the most common material used for trucks because it's durable, lightweight, and affordable. Titanium is more expensive but is lighter and stronger than aluminum. Skateboard Trucks can also be made in different styles and technology, including Hollow's and Reverse Kingpin. Hollow trucks are made with a hollowed-out design that removes material from the centre of the truck, resulting in a lighter weight. A reverse kingpin truck is lower set into the hanger and offers more clearance for grinds, often tagged as a "Grind King". These features can add a lot to your skateboarding experience, however they may not be ideal for every skater and the classic tried and true style of truck may be the perfect fit.

Bring Out The Rubbers

Bushings are the small rubber or urethane components that fit inside the trucks and help with turning. Softer bushings are ideal for lighter skaters or those who prefer loose trucks, while harder bushings are better for heavier skaters or those who prefer tighter trucks. Most trucks are set with a mid range Bushing and are easily upgraded after the fact. Do you ride your trucks so loose the bushings are just decoration? Try a softer bushing to get that same feel without all the sloppy hanger shake. Or the opposite, do you crank your trucks so tight the bushing looks like it's being squashed? Upgrade to a harder bushing to get the same stiff ride without sacrificing the function.

Choosing The Brand / Colour

There are many brands of skateboard trucks available, each with its own unique features and benefits. Some of the most popular brands include Independent, Thunder, Krux, Bullet and Venture. They also come in a variety of colours, collaborations and pro models. Tho these won't change your ride experience, they can really help make your setup feel unique.
